Protect PDF

Password-protect a PDF with AES-256 encryption and optionally restrict printing, copying and editing — encrypted in your browser.

Encrypt a PDF before you email or upload it, so only people with the password can open it. Optionally stop them from printing, copying text or editing.

Encryption happens on your own device with strong AES-256 — the same standard banks use. Neither your file nor your password is ever sent anywhere.

How to use Protect PDF

  1. Click “Choose PDF file” or drop your PDF onto the page.
  2. Type a password (the meter shows how strong it is) and repeat it.
  3. Untick what people shouldn't be allowed to do: print, copy, edit.
  4. Click “Protect PDF” and download the encrypted file.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recover my password if I forget it?

No. The password never leaves your device and isn't stored anywhere, so nobody can recover it. Keep it somewhere safe.

How strong is the protection?

AES-256 with a good password (12+ characters mixing letters, numbers and symbols) is practically impossible to break. Short or common passwords can be guessed.

Do restrictions really stop printing and copying?

Most PDF readers respect them, but some tools ignore them. The open password is what really protects the content.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is encrypted by your own browser.
