Unit Converter

Convert length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, time, data size, pressure and energy between metric and imperial units — instantly.

Convert between metric and imperial units in one place: centimetres and inches, kilograms and pounds, Celsius and Fahrenheit, litres and gallons, square metres and square feet, km/h and mph, and more — ten categories in all. Type in either box and the other updates instantly; every other unit in the category is listed below.

The converter uses the exact official definitions (an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg), so results are precise, not rounded approximations.

How to use Unit Converter

  1. Choose a category: Length, Weight, Temperature, Volume, Area, Speed, Time, Data size, Pressure or Energy.

Temperature: Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin

Temperature scales have different zero points, so you can't just multiply. °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin starts at absolute zero: K = °C + 273.15.

MB or MiB? Data sizes explained

Storage makers count in powers of 1000 (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), while Windows and many programs count in powers of 1024 but still write “GB”. The binary units have their own names: 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. That is why a “1 TB” drive shows about 931 GB in Windows — it is 931 GiB. Choose Data size to convert between them.

Metric or imperial: who uses which?

Almost every country uses the metric system (SI) officially. The United States uses US customary units — inches, feet, miles, pounds, fluid ounces and degrees Fahrenheit — in everyday life, while science and medicine there use metric. The United Kingdom mixes both: road distances and speeds in miles, beer and milk in pints, body weight often in stone, but most other measurements in metric. Aviation and shipping worldwide use feet for altitude and knots and nautical miles for speed and distance. That is why recipes, product specifications and travel often need a quick conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is the unit converter free?

Yes, it is free, needs no sign-up and works in your browser.

How many centimetres are in an inch?

Exactly 2.54. To convert inches to cm, multiply by 2.54; to convert cm to inches, divide by 2.54 (or multiply by about 0.3937).

How do I convert kg to pounds?

Multiply kilograms by about 2.2046. One pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32. For example, 20 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 68 °F.

Why are US and UK gallons different?

They come from different historical definitions. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, a UK imperial gallon 4.546 litres — about 20% more. Pints and fluid ounces differ too.

How accurate are the results?

The factors are the exact international definitions, and results are shown to 10 significant digits.

Can I share a conversion?

Yes — the page address updates with your category, units and value, so you can copy and share the link.
