How age is calculated

Age is counted the way people count birthdays: whole years first, then whole months, then the remaining days. If the day of the month hasn't been reached yet, a month is borrowed and the days of the previous month are added. When a month is shorter than the birth day, its last day counts: from 31 January to 1 March in a non-leap year is 1 month (to 28 February) and 1 day. Someone born on 15 May 1990 is 34 years, 11 months and 29 days old on 14 May 2025.

Birthdays on 29 February

People born on 29 February only have a real birthday in leap years. In other years this calculator counts the birthday on 28 February, the last day of the month. Customs and laws differ — some countries use 1 March instead for legal purposes.

Useful age facts

A year has 365 days, or 366 in a leap year (every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not). On average a year is 365.2425 days, 52.18 weeks or 8,765.8 hours. Someone who has just turned 30 has lived about 10,957 days.

When you need an exact age or date difference

Many forms and rules depend on exact age or on the time between two dates: school entry cut-off dates, minimum ages for driving or voting, retirement and pension dates, visa and passport validity, insurance and warranty periods, notice periods and probation in a job, or the number of days until an event. Set “Age on” to the deadline to see whether an age requirement is met on that day, or use “Time between two dates” for contracts and projects. For legal decisions, check the exact rule — some countries count a person as a year older on the day before the birthday.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks old is my baby?

Enter the date of birth; the result shows the total weeks and days, and the age in months and days — the way paediatricians usually count for the first two years.

How do I calculate my exact age?

Enter your date of birth. The calculator shows your age today in years, months and days. To see your age on another date, change “Age on”.

How old will I be on a certain date?

Keep your date of birth and set “Age on” to the future date, for example a retirement or an exam date.

How many days until my birthday?

The next birthday, its weekday and the number of days to go are shown below the result.

Can I count the days between two dates?

Yes. Choose “Time between two dates” and enter a start and end date. You get the difference in years, months and days, the total days, and the count including the end date.

Why do different age calculators show different days?

Months have different lengths, so tools can count the leftover days differently near month ends. This calculator borrows the actual length of the previous month, the method most people use.

Is my date of birth stored?

No. It is only used in your browser and kept in the page address so you can share the result.
